Morehouse College Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship

To be eligible for this award, you must plan on attending Morehouse College. You must also demonstrate academic excellence and leadership potential. A minimum GPA of 3.5 is required, as is a minimum SAT score of 1250 or an ACT score of 27. The scholarship will be awarded based on financial need, and is renewable up to eight semesters.

UNCF Scholarships

The United Negro College Fund administers a number of scholarship programs for African American women. UNCF administers 400 scholarship and internship programs, which are designed to provide students with the resources they need to succeed. With a network of 37 member colleges and universities, UNCF is the nation’s largest private scholarship provider to minority group members. It also administers the nation’s largest minority education network, consisting of more than 1,100 member schools and organizations. These range from full-time four-year colleges and universities to historically black graduate schools with enrollments as small as 50 students.

Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs

The Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs seeks to reduce the impact of faculty shortages and honor excellence in research. To be eligible for this award, you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident who is enrolled in or has applied to a relevant PhD or ScD program, or is a post-doc planning to work in teaching/research at the college level. This fellowship is good for one year and can be renewed. The award amount is $25,000, paid annually.

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program

• You must be African American and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident enrolled in a full-time graduate program in science, technology, engineering, mathematics or social sciences at an accredited US institution of higher education.
• You must have completed a bachelor’s degree in one of the areas listed above before beginning your program.
• You must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Gates Millennium Scholars Program

The Gates Millennium Scholars Program awards scholarships to students based on academic achievement, as well as leadership and community service. These scholarships are renewable and can be used at any college in the U.S. Students of any ethnic background are eligible to apply, as long as they are US citizens.

This is an excellent opportunity for African American women who want to pursue education beyond high school level without worrying about money being a barrier to their dreams.

The Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship Program

• If you are a high school senior of color, with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, who is attending an accredited 4-year college in the United States, then you are eligible for this scholarship of $28,000.
• This scholarship can be renewed for up to 4 years.
• The deadline to apply is March 15th.

It’s important to know that there are many additional minority-focused organizations out there, who may offer scholarships as well, including ones for Native Americans, Latinos/Latinas, Hispanics, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI), Muslim Americans/Middle Eastern Americans (MEFA), LGBTQ+ students and more.
