CALIFORNIA INTERSHIPS: DAVID W. GILMORE INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS INTERNSHIP
This two-month internship is open to students who are currently attending a United States based undergraduate institution, with an interest in international human rights. Students are selected on the basis of their academic achievements and demonstrated commitment to human rights.
The internship is located at the University of Coimbra’s Centre for Social Studies (CES) in Coimbra, Portugal, a UNESCO World Heritage site. During this intensive 8 week program interns will develop an understanding of the legal and political frameworks that govern human rights within Brazil, as well as an appreciation for Brazilian history and culture. In addition to coursework, students will visit key sites such as the International Court of Justice in The Hague and attend lectures by leading experts on international law and human rights issues.
Students can receive up to 6 credits through their home university or through Yale University’s Summer Session Online program. The deadline to apply is March 1st
As an unpaid internship, the Gilmore program is a unique opportunity for law students to work at an international human rights organization abroad. Each year, the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Rule of Law Initiative (ROLI) operates two programs that provide one-month internships for law students in Geneva, Switzerland and Strasbourg, France.
The Gilmore Unpaid Public Interest Fellowship program is a unique opportunity for law students to work at an international human rights organization abroad. The goal of the program is to support future public interest lawyers, who may be concerned about the financial burden of working in public interest internships during their summer vacation. The program is generously sponsored by the Robert and Cortney Novick Family Foundation and named in honor of the late civil rights lawyer, Jim Gilmore.
Benefits
There are several main benefits that come with being a Gilmore Fellow, including:
- No age limit. Applicants can be any age, as long as they meet all other requirements.
- No language requirement or experience necessary. A large number of fields related to human rights are available so that if you have no previous experience, there will likely be a position suited to your current skillset.
- No application fee required. Many awards require applicants to pay an application fee until they are accepted into the program, but this one doesn’t. This allows you to have more money for things like travel expenses when you go on your internship trip or for tuition once you start school again in the fall!

The future can start today
You can make your future a bright place—or you can leave it up to chance. It’s all up to you.
- The future starts today. What you do today will influence and determine your future in some way, shape, or form.
- Set goals for yourself and start working towards them. Some people think the only way to get where they want is by following a standard path: graduate from high school, go to college, get a degree, get a 9-to-5 job after graduation, work hard and save money for years until retirement comes around, die happy when the time comes (hopefully). Although this is one of the most common ways that people approach their futures, it doesn’t have to be the only way—and it certainly isn’t always the right way for you. If there are other things you want out of life—exposure to new places and cultures; the thrill of adventure; fun experiences with friends that they’ll remember forever—then why not start working towards those goals now? And if living abroad is something that interests you too… well, read on!
