The internship program is open to university students, recent graduates (within 12 months) and non-students. Interns are expected to commit themselves fully if they choose this type of program; however, it can be as short or long as you want it to be. You can also do mini-terms if that suits your needs better.
- There are opportunities for part-time internships at Amnesty International’s offices in London and Washington D.C., which run from one month up until two years maximum. The positions are available on both a paid basis (£9 per hour), depending on the location
Generally, there are three types of internships available at each location. From time to time there may be other opportunities outside these types.
Interns at Amnesty International undertake research, write reports and campaign on a range of human rights issues. They work with the organization’s staff to create change in their communities by raising awareness about human rights violations and contributing to advocacy efforts. Some interns also assist with administrative tasks such as copying documents, filing and researching media contacts.
Internships are available at Amnesty offices across Canada. Internships are unpaid except for some travel expenses if you live far away from an office location and need to be reimbursed for travel costs (please note that there is no guarantee that this will happen).
Research interns will have the opportunity to undertake research across the breadth of our work.
Amnesty International is a leading global human rights organization, and we are looking for applicants to work as research interns. Research interns will have the opportunity to undertake research across the breadth of our work. This work may involve desk-based research and writing, or field research. Fieldwork may include human rights issues in specific countries, human rights themes, or specific human rights violations.
Research interns will be expected to make an impact on Amnesty International’s global advocacy campaigns by conducting focused research projects on current and emerging issues related to our mandate areas (see below). The focus of your internship will be determined by your interests and skillsets as well as those of Amnesty International’s campaigns/projects at a given time during your placement with us.
Campaigns interns will support our campaigning work which is focused on highlighting human rights abuses and campaigning for governments to address them.
Amnesty International Campaigning Internship
Working in the campaigns team, you’ll support our campaigning work which is focused on highlighting human rights abuses and campaigning for governments to address them. You will be given tasks related to research, project management or outreach (such as producing materials). You may also shadow projects that are currently running in other countries or learn more about specific areas of focus such as women’s rights or refugees.
This internship lasts 6 weeks with flexible start dates between September and March each year.
Administration and operations interns may support a range of activities including general office administration, translation work or logistics for events or campaigns.

Administrative tasks include:
- maintaining the social media accounts;
- preparing for and attending meetings;
- taking minutes in meeting;
- making travel arrangements for staff and volunteers, etc.
Most internships last for between two and six months and are full-time (at least four days a week).

You should expect to be working at least 40 hours a week, though it’s not unusual for interns to work more than this. All candidates need to be able to demonstrate fluency in English, written and spoken. In some cases we would also like applicants to provide evidence of their ability in other languages. We use language skills in a number of ways, from translating text from one language into English or another language, to taking minutes in meetings where more than one language is being used.

- Amnesty International’s Global Campaigns Internship Programme is open to people aged 18-30 who wish to work on campaigns relating to any country or issue area that involves human rights violations such as detention without trial, torture and extrajudicial executions. The programme runs for 12 months between October and September (subject to academic overload).
- Amnesty International’s Human Rights Defenders Internship Programme is open to people aged 18-30 who wish to work with human rights defenders around the world defending their rights under international law or supporting them in rebuilding their lives after conflict or repression. The programme runs for 12 months between October and September (subject to academic overload).
- Amnesty International’s Young Human Rights Leader Programmes are designed specifically for youth leaders aged 15-25 who want training and skills development opportunities in advocacy, campaigning & mobilization skills through an immersion program with local partners at one of our offices worldwide; these programmes run throughout the year but can vary depending on partner availability.
