Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services offers a variety of internship opportunities. Most placements take place in the fall semester, but there are also opportunities during the spring semester. Each placement offers specific job functions, along with participation in team meetings, training, and agency-wide meetings.

Interns will be trained to conduct needs and interest assessments, create content for online mobilization, and engage in critical thinking and discussion with people from diverse backgrounds. The internship will also require interns to work on projects involving strategic planning and research. In addition, interns will be responsible for data entry, copy work, and research synthesis.
The Advocacy Department oversees the Youth Advocacy internship program, where four youth interns work with the VP of Advocacy on legislative changes to benefit youth experiencing homelessness. Two of the intern positions prioritize the needs of survivors of human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. Interns attend coalition meetings, draft policy memos, testify at City Council, and work on video projects. They learn valuable leadership skills and make sure CHNY’s advocacy agenda elevates the voices of young people.
This program matches high school and college students with mentors from a local business. Interns spend three weeks with each mentor. The internship program starts with a leadership seminar, where students learn about work styles, workplace etiquette, and community needs. The goal is to help youth gain experience in a workplace setting while building relationships with caring adults.
