The world of esports is booming and becoming more popular every year.

As you’re probably well aware, esports is a booming industry. It’s estimated to be worth $1 billion in 2019, and it shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. In fact, as the world becomes more integrated with technology and video games become increasingly popular, we can expect this number to grow exponentially over the next decade or so.

This rapid growth doesn’t just apply to viewership; there are also many career opportunities available for those interested in pursuing a career in esports. You don’t have to be an expert gamer yourself—there are plenty of jobs available for those who excel at other skillsets that relate directly to gaming: management, marketing/branding/advertising/PR (public relations), graphic design and web development. And if you’re looking for something more hands-on than simply working behind the scenes on social media accounts or creating graphics for apparel companies? Well then maybe being an analyst (analyzing player data) or coach might be right up your alley!

Even though esports is still relatively new in the grand scheme of things, we can all agree that it’s an exciting time to be involved in our industry. As an intern at ESL you’ll get exposure to everything from tournament production (think stage design) to social media marketing—and if you’re really lucky, maybe even some marketing analytics work!

There are more esports tournaments than ever before, more players and fans, more teams signing deals with sponsors. The market is expected to reach $1 billion in revenue in 2019.

In other words: it’s prime time for a new company or product line in the space—and if you’re an esports player yourself (or know someone who should be), that means it’s also prime time for an internship or entry-level job at one of these companies.

Esports has even been added as a 2022 Asian Games medal event.

In a recent announcement, the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) has added esports as an exhibition event for the 2022 Asian Games. The 2022 Asian games are the highest level of sporting competition in Asia and is held every four years. While not yet confirmed, there’s a good chance that esports will be included in the 2024 Olympic Games.

If you consider how far esports has come in just over a decade (it was only recognized as a sport by South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2001), it seems like a no-brainer that we should expect to see this popular trend at future sporting events on an international level.

That’s great news for anyone who wants to work in the industry, but it also means competition for jobs is getting tougher.

As the esports industry continues to grow, so too does the number of people competing for jobs in it. Companies are more selective when they hire and universities are getting more selective when they admit students. This means that it’s a good idea to get an internship as soon as you can—even if you don’t have any experience yet—to gain some knowledge of what your future employers will want from your work.

A degree or diploma could help you stand out from other candidates if you’re applying for jobs in the esports industry.

If you’re applying for esports internships, you may find that having a degree or diploma will put you at an advantage over other candidates. Not only does it show that you have the drive and determination to complete a course of study, but it also demonstrates your passion for gaming and what it means to be part of the community.

If an employer is looking at two candidates who both have good grades but one has completed an esports course at university, they’re likely to choose the candidate who has this additional experience on his or her resume.

Many universities now offer courses on esports and game design.

The list of universities offering esports courses is extensive, and continues to grow each year.

Here are some examples:

• RIT offers a course titled “Video Game Development and Design,” which includes topics like goal setting, project management, programming in C++ and Java. Online students can also pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer science with an emphasis on game design through the Rochester Institute of Technology’s online program.
• The University at Buffalo offers an introductory course in esports which covers the history and culture surrounding competitive video gaming; it also provides students with hands-on experience working with industry leaders on real-world projects such as designing an advertising campaign or creating a piece of artwork for a new virtual reality game.
