GCHQ stands for Government Communications Headquarters and is the UK’s intelligence and security organisation.

Who can apply? You should be a university or college student who has an interest in cyber security, computer science, mathematics or related subjects. You should also have a good academic record and a passion for technology.

Benefits: As well as gaining valuable work experience on a highly competitive programme with many opportunities for progression, interns will receive an attractive salary of £20 per hour plus travel costs and lunch allowance. Internships last between 3 months to 12 months depending on your availability but you must commit to at least 6 weeks during the summer period (between May and September). Internships are full time Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm unless otherwise arranged with your line manager.

You can apply for a summer internship at GCHQ through the website. The application form is available here. You’ll need to fill out the online form, upload a CV and cover letter and attach any supporting documents (if relevant). You should also include contact details for up to two referees who will be contacted by GCHQ if you are successful in your application.

Once you have completed all of the application steps, please ensure that you check over your submission carefully before clicking ‘submit’. Ensure that all documents are readable and free of spelling or grammatical errors—this can be done by reading through your CV after attaching it by using screen reader software if needed. Failure to submit an error-free document may result in no further action being taken on your application until these issues have been addressed.

Long internships are for ten weeks, with placements available during the spring or summer terms. The following roles are available:

• Software Developer
• Research Scientist (Machine Learning)
• Research Scientist (Network Security)

GCHQ offers two internship programmes: the long and the short. The long programme runs from July to September, while the short one takes place from June to July. Both are based in Cheltenham or Scarborough, or you can opt for a mixture of both locations if that’s what works for you. You can apply for either programme independently, or you can apply for both at once!

There are two summer internship programmes at GCHQ. Both programmes are open to all students and you can apply for either location, or both locations. All applicants must be UK citizens.

The Long Programme is a four-week scheme that gives students the opportunity to work on a specific project over the summer. Students will also have access to a range of training activities and events throughout their time here, including an induction week which covers everything from how GCHQ works to where we eat lunch! There’s even time for some leisure activities – our canteen serves breakfast and lunch every day so you won’t go hungry (or thirsty), even after working hard all day!

The Short Programme runs from Monday through Friday with flexible start/finish times depending on when your placement starts/ends at your university. It’s aimed at those who want a shorter period of work experience or want more flexibility in terms of what days they come in each week; however it’s still packed full of interesting things like guided tours around our campus plus networking opportunities with other interns during breaks between working hours.”
