internships for architects
International Internships
International architecture internship programs are a great way to gain experience in the field and make connections with other architects from around the world. Most international internships require that you already have some experience in the field, so if you’re interested in applying for these types of programs, consider getting an internship or volunteer position before applying for one of these positions.
International Architecture Internship Programs
- Global Architecture Internship Program (GAIP)
- GLASS: Graduate Leadership in Architectural Studies
- Global Career Experience Internship Program (GCXIP)
- University-Sponsored International Internships (USII)
On-Campus Internships
University internships are an excellent way to get your foot in the door. Your internship is likely to be with a professor, and you will be working alongside other students who are also trying to make their way in the industry. This arrangement allows you to learn from each other’s experiences while gaining valuable technical knowledge from the academic side of things.
University internships can also serve as a good starting point for future career paths if you’re interested in going into academia yourself or applying for graduate school later on down the road.
Federal Government Internships
The Federal Government offers internships through a number of agencies and departments. These include the following:
- Department of Labor
- Environmental Protection Agency
- National Park Service
- Bureau of Indian Affairs
The best way to find out about these opportunities is by visiting the website for your chosen department or agency, which you can do by searching online for “federal government jobs.” Each will have information on who they are hiring and how to apply—typically just an application form that takes minutes to fill out! Many require resumes as well, so be sure yours is up-to-date before submitting it. Prepare yourself with questions so you can ask the interviewer during your interview; some may be provided in advance while others will come up during conversation. If there’s something specific you want us thinking about when we’re reviewing your answers then tell us now too because sometimes our minds wander off into other things when we should’ve been paying attention…
State Government Internships
State government internships are similar to federal government internships, but they differ in a few ways.
- State governments typically only hire local residents or at least people who can relocate to the state capital. This means that if you’re not from the area, your chances of getting an internship will be much lower.
- Unlike federal government internships, state government internships don’t pay as well and may only offer minimum wage.
- You must be willing to relocate for at least one year if you want this kind of internship because it’s usually located in the capital city of a state.
City/County Government Internships
- Internships with county government offices
- Internships with city governments
- Internship with the county public works department (government agency that maintains roads, bridges and water systems)
- Internships at county planning departments (government agencies that plan for development and growth)
- Internships at the county or city’s planning or community development office
Corporate and Private Business Internships
Corporate and Private Business Internships
Internships in the corporate world are another way to gain experience and network. You may be able to find internships at architecture firms, but it is also possible that you will be able to land an internship with a company or institution that wants someone with your skillset. These types of opportunities are often available through your school’s career center or other organizations like The Field Institute and AIA San Francisco Bay.
The best way to find these kinds of opportunities is by networking—you never know who might know someone who needs an intern!
These internships will help you get the experience you need to land your first job as an architect
If you’re interested in becoming an architect, then it’s important to start as early as your first year of college.
Architectural interns work in a variety of settings including office buildings and large corporations. They also work with residential clients who need assistance creating plans for their homes, apartments or condos. Interns don’t just design buildings—they often get the opportunity to work on interiors as well!
Internships are a great way to gain real world experience while making connections that will help you land your first job after graduation.
