The programme is open to those who are studying at postgraduate level, or have recently graduated with an undergraduate degree. However, this must be in one of the following subject areas: Accounting, Business Administration/Management, Economics, Finance & Banking/Accounting (including Taxation), Human Resource Management/Personnel Management & Industrial Relations; Journalism; Law; Languages including Germanic languages such as Dutch or Swedish but excluding French , Spanish and Russian which can be accommodated under other schemes run by other departments that we may introduce later on if necessary ; Social Work (except those who are already employed by us).

Internships last from three months up to 12 months, depending on individual circumstances. They offer you an opportunity to experience working life within Scottish Government while gaining valuable work experience in your chosen field as well as develop your skills through training activities provided during your internship period with us .

We provide opportunities for both graduates and non-graduates (we would expect non-graduate applicants to have relevant work experience), but primarily this programme is aimed at students who are about to leave university or are taking a year out before starting a post graduate course.

The successful applicant will have:

  • A good honours degree (2:1 or above) in an appropriate subject area, preferably with an understanding of business and public policy.
  • Excellent communication skills (written, oral and interpersonal).
  • The ability to manage time effectively in order for them to achieve all their requirements within the internship period.

Interns will be recruited against identified business areas throughout Scottish Government and there may be more than one vacancy in any area. Interns will be expected to relocate to Edinburgh during the internship period and details of each vacancy will be available on our website.

Students are encouraged to apply for positions that match their skills, interests and experience. Students must be eligible for 2nd year undergraduate study at a Scottish University or College.

Please note that all applications must be submitted by 5pm on 10 January 2018 and candidates will be contacted no later than 12 noon on 21 January 2018 with a decision regarding their application. All shortlisted candidates will receive an invitation to attend an assessment centre where they will be asked to undertake one or more fitness tests as well as other exercises designed to test your ability to perform in our challenging environment and meet the selection criteria outlined above. It is essential that you arrive at this assessment centre on time if your application is being considered – applicants who do not arrive at their allocated time may not be considered further in the process..
