The Developing Social Minds (DSM) Laboratory is directed by Dr. Allison Master, who is Professor of Psychology at Boston College. Her lab studies social development in young children (socio-emotional development and peer relationships). Our research has implications for understanding typical and atypical social development. As an intern in this program, you will have the opportunity to engage with leading researchers on topics such as parent-child interactions, attachment security during infancy/early childhood, and the role of emotion regulation in developing mental health during adolescence.

The summer internship program allows students to gain skills and knowledge about social change through hands-on experience with diverse nonprofit organizations. The program provides students with an opportunity to explore a range of career interests, develop competencies in leadership, communication, research and analysis, project management and other areas relevant to their future careers while also gaining valuable work experience. Students will receive a stipend of $2,000 per month for an eight-month period.

Are you interested in a summer internship working with young children and undergraduates?
If so, apply to be a developmental psychology research intern at Boston College! As an intern, you will gain experience working with children and developing skills in data collection, coding, and data analysis. You will also attend weekly training sessions focused on career and research development. This is a paid internship that requires you to be available 30 hours per week from June 3 – August 9. You will work in teams of two and your schedule will depend on the families you are assigned.

About the Program
The Social Development Lab at Boston College studies social and emotional development in children. We are interested in the development of prosocial behaviors, such as empathy and sharing, as well as the development of antisocial behaviors such as aggression and deception. We use a variety of methods to study these processes including behavioral observations and interviews with parents or guardians (called “mothers” or “fathers” here), rating scales completed by mothers or fathers to assess how much they think their child understands about different topics (like how to share), questionnaires completed by mothers or fathers that ask them about their child’s experiences in certain situations (like sharing with friends), laboratory experiments where children are randomly assigned to play games with other children who may be either similar or different from themselves on several characteristics including age; gender; ethnicity/race; socioeconomic status etc., so we can see how these factors influence what happens when kids interact with each other

The Developing Social Minds (DSM) Laboratory is directed by Dr. Allison Master, who is Professor of Psychology at Boston College. Her lab studies social development in young children (socio-emotional development and peer relationships). Our research has implications for understanding typical and atypical social development, including the onset of autism spectrum disorder.
The program aims to provide a unique experience for undergraduates interested in furthering their careers in developmental psychology or other applied fields related to early childhood education or health care. It offers students opportunities to develop skills that may be required by employers in these fields, including familiarity with developmental assessment procedures; experience conducting data collection; knowledge of state-of-the art research methods; and familiarity with computers and word processing programs used to analyze data obtained from questionnaires/interviews conducted during home visits or school observations. Students also help organize lab meetings where they present results from their own projects as well as those conducted by other members of the lab team.

We believe that the DSM Lab is an excellent place to gain experience working with children and undergraduates. It offers opportunities to build valuable skills in data collection, coding, and data analysis while learning about the fields of developmental psychology and child development.
