UNESCO Zimbabwe Internship Program

With its UNESCO International Training Program, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) offers a wide range of internship opportunities for qualified students.

The program is open to students in their final year or those with less than two years remaining before completing their studies.

The internship program is offered at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France; its field offices around the world; and related organizations such as World Heritage Centre, Man & Biosphere Reserve Programme Management Unit (MAB), International Hydrological Programme (IHP), International Biodiversity Information Facility (IBIS).

UNESCO Internship Programme

The UNESCO Internship Programme provides an opportunity for young people from all over the world to gain knowledge and experience in fields related to culture, heritage, education and communication. The programme is open to university students who have completed their second year of studies (or equivalent) with a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4-point scale.

Applicants must send in their application package via email no later than 12 noon UTC+1 on 1 March 2019. The application package will include:

A letter explaining why you want to do an internship at UNESCO and how it would benefit your future career;

Your CV or resume;

A recent photo (for identification purposes);

An academic transcript (you can use your university’s online system).

UNESCO Headquarters Internships

The UNESCO Headquarters Internship is a full-time (40 hours per week) internship for 3 months, based at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. It is open to graduate students from Member States of UNESCO who have completed their bachelor’s degree and are enrolled in an accredited master’s or doctoral program.

The internship provides an opportunity for young professionals to gain experience working within the framework of UNESCO’s mission by assisting with research projects and contributing to inter-cultural dialogue.

Candidates should possess advanced level skills in English language, including reading and writing skills; they must be computer literate with proficiency in word processing software packages such as Microsoft Word or OpenOffice Writer (or equivalent). Candidates must also possess excellent analytical skills, problem solving abilities, strong intercultural awareness and communication skills (oral/written). The successful candidate will also demonstrate a commitment towards sustainable development issues through participation in CSR activities carried out by their institution or relevant non-governmental organisations during their studies (optional).

Guidelines on the Internship Programme

  • You may apply to the following fields: education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, communication and information
  • The internship must be a minimum of two months in duration, and a maximum of six months.
  • The internship is unpaid.

About UNESCO Internship Program

The program is open to all nationalities who meet the eligibility requirements.

A minimum of 3 years’ work experience in a relevant field, or a Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline with at least one year of professional experience are required for application.

The internship will be located in Harare, Zimbabwe for 1 year or longer based on mutual agreement between UNESCO and the applicant. In this context, both parties will agree on a detailed bi-weekly schedule for each week as well as any specific requirements that may be required by an individual intern during their time at UNESCO.

The responsibilities and duties of an intern include:

  • Participation on projects related to their field of study (e.g., education, natural sciences) through research activities including data collection and analysis; developing new tools/methods; conducting surveys; reporting results back to management team members; contributing towards strategic decision making processes through providing support materials such as reports/documents/presentations etc.; working closely with other team members involved such as consultants/advisers from partner institutions (UNESCO member states).

UNESCO internships 2019

  • You must be a national of a Member State of UNESCO.
  • You must be between 21 and 30 years old at the time of application, both inclusive.
  • You must be enrolled in a post-graduate study programme (second university degree or higher) in a field relevant to UNESCO’s mandate.
  • If you are applying for an internship outside your home country, you should have basic command of English or French language(s).

The internship programme at UNESCO Headquarters consists of six months full-time or 12 months part-time internships within different departments of UNESCO that are open to: Students who have completed their first year in university studies; Students who are currently studying for their second year in university; Graduate students (Master’s degree); Graduates from a two-year Postgraduate Diploma course at university level; Graduates from 4 years Bachelor degree programme at University level (Bachelor degree holders); Graduates from 5 years Bachelor Degree Programme at University Level (Bachelor’s Degree holders).
